Report: 500 Troops Deploy to Rio Grande Valley in Texas After Drug Cartel Members Shoot at USCG Vessel
Roughly 500 troops are reportedly deploying to the Texas Rio Grande Valley after a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) vessel was fired upon by drug cartel members over the weekend. The incident, according to a USCG statement, took place in the vicinity of Garceno, Texas on Saturday while the Coast Guard was conducting joint interdiction operations with federal partners.
“Coast Guard personnel returned fire. No injuries to Coast Guard, or other personnel were reported, and no damage to Coast Guard assets was reported,” the statement said.
A video obtained by News Nation shows troops being dropped off by chinook helicopters.
“The Coast Guard works closely with U.S. Border Patrol, the Department of War and the Texas Military Department to secure the border, disrupt illicit activity and protect the American people,” the USCG statement said. “We will continue to leverage a layered, integrated approach to control, secure, and defend the border that strengthens our collective ability to counter illicit activity and safeguard our personnel and the communities we serve.”
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
U.S. forces are also reportedly using counter-drone technology to counter cartel-linked drones along this stretch of the border.
Cartels are increasingly using drones to monitor Border Patrol movements and support drug smuggling and human trafficking operations, according to Fox News, and the U.S. military has responded with “detection systems and high-energy lasers.”
From August to September, at least eleven unauthorized drones in the Rio Grande Valley have been taken down, News Nation reported.
