so this would seem to only be an issue with that particular distribution. All the mainstream linux distros these days are getting more objectionable for various reasons, but there are still plenty which arent pulling stuff from microsoft. even better would be something like OpenBSD.

That’s a start, but OpenBSD for most amateur PI projects is going to be like slamming their hand in a drawer, repeatedly. The issue still comes down to convenience vs security/anonymity. Radio wise, If you go through some of the popular Winlink and APRS host source, plus even some of the digital apps, you’ll have a conniption at the vulnerabilities throughout. But Joe Ham isn’t going to go through the source, or even know where to start to write his own software.
The difference here is these hosts or software are vulnerable not only or specifically through tcp/ip (IE APRS-IS reliance), but there’s all sorts of nasty injection tricks you can play remotely via modulated audio that go straight to the pi boxes. Key up and run your afsk modulation attack from anywhere, and you can do some interesting things to systems listening.
      “Security through obscurity”. Good times.
