SPYCRAFT 101: The Green Beret Defector with Greg Walker

This is one of the best podcasts I’ve listened to in quite some time. Not only does Greg Walker give a first hand account of David Baez, a Nicaraguan who emigrated to America, enlisting in the Army and joining Special Forces, to later defecting to the Sandinistas as a result of a moral question over the murder of his father.

Its a pretty incredible and simultaneously tragic story, interspersed with critical truths about insurgency and counterinsurgency warfare. This is a must-listen for many reasons, and one I’ve found myself listening to over and over.

This is an interesting interview to me. Much of my early academic focus was on better understanding what was going on in Central America during my time in the army preparing for that theater of war. This information supports my learned understanding of people involved in many of these communist revolutions. The oligarchs who run these countries are so fucked up and backed by uncle sugar, that a good amount of the people who joined these revolutions did so because there was no other viable alternative to successfully overthrow them. It was not that they were all committed communists as much as that the revolutionaries provided the only realistic possibility of success. Interestingly, hatred of the oligarchs drives them to an equal or worse version of the dark side. Certainly some of the more higher ranking people in this situation may have felt that they could have been a moderating influence upon the future successful revolutionaries. However, I don’t believe that we have any evidence of these people having any success moderating the new marxist regimes.
