Who’s The Boss? A Real World Lesson In Intelligence Collection

A picture, so they say, is worth a thousand words.

And as I cover in class, the goal of intelligence is exploitation, and intelligence begins with observation and how we interpret that which is observed.

Imagery intelligence (IMAGINT), a fancy term for pictures, does a number of things for us – can give estimates of equipment status, enemy posture, enemy readiness (and fitness), levels of capability, and generate new requests for information (RFIs) on other intelligence domains. Could be signals intelligence (SIGINT), human intelligence (HUMINT), etc. Each of these generate paths to potential exploitation.

Chief among those however is mapping the human terrain. Who’s in charge? Who’s the boss? The street boss is mid level management (at best) but he’s the target of interest when circumventing the larger action cell. You’re not going to roll them all up, but taking out key leadership creates chaos up and down the insurgent chain.

So we have a public show of force on display at a drag queen story time hosted by Anderson Distillery in Roanoke TX. This is the self identified local chapter of the John Brown Gun Club.

We’ve got weapons – AR15s, some with optics, some not, nothing standardized, and no night vision capability present. Based on their posture towards the camera its pretty easy to infer they’re there for a show and not much else. Its a reaction this crowd is actually looking for – not a fight. We can assess their level of capability as low during the day, likely non-existent at night.

They have communications capability which is outward facing for the world to see, and should a fight break out those radios are going to get smashed up quick. But it would be a good opportunity to snag up those operating frequencies with a communications receiver or a scanner equipped with close call.

But I wanna know who’s in charge, and I want to be able to explain why.

One thing that’s universal in insurgent groups, from Kandahar to Kansas and everywhere in between, is that the guy in charge is going to be wearing something of distinction. Sometimes its subtle, in which case we have to observe the human interaction between the observed group, in other cases, they way they’re dressed and configuring of equipment.

Here’s your guy. The first flag is his clothes – he can downgrade his gear and fit into the crowd in the background. He’s not so into the whole anarchist black block attire, and that’s likely because he’s also a local and has a relationship with the distillery in question. His stance indicates a level of training and he’s not focused on the cameras, he’s actually pulling security, at least somewhat, which is another indicator of training. His bag is slung low to rapidly index it and it likely contains medical gear for the group. The gear loadout doesn’t match the others and looks just a little more squared away.

Last, look at his feet. Feet tell us the whole story. Those comfy slipper shoes are great for what he’s doing here and completes the look – he can take them off quick and throw on a pair of Justin’s and he’s right back in the crowd.

If you want to shut this crowd down, that’s your target.

And there’s going to be a lot more of this in the near future. Two things – get training and don’t be the same example for the opposition.

Spot on assessment for the action arm. Scan the “civilians” for the local agitprop supporters, they don’t read as tactical but with a little open source intel work they can help ID the tacticals. And occasionally you catch the “pearl.”

Looking at the whole photoset is interesting. There is the aspect of the overwatch “snipers” posted in the parking garage, and the question of whether they expected any real trouble or not. That precaution seems to run against the evidence of the showtime only appearance of the tactical members on display, A couple of the civilians look like they could be unarmed JB members in street clothes, and for that matter some of the dressed JB members are unarmed and look like they were put up to larping for a bigger show of strength. Definitely a worthy exercise.

Excellent tells! Many, many years ago I read Carlos Hathcock’s book. When he went in solo to take out the General, he needed a tell for ID. He said, “the leader will be the one who points around a lot.” Never forgot it…

Yup. There’s always a tell. Always. Even if the target in question is slick about it, his subordinates are not. They’re going to react a particular way and we can observe that through their body language.

Vietnam was a good lesson for not looking important. Subdued rank insignia made an early appearance. No saluting in the field was so important that is become permanent doctrine. Pistols or carbines instead of rifles. Not gesturing a lot is another big one. Posturing with you hands on your hips while others work around you is another. Standing too close to the radioman was a sure way to get shot at that could not be helped much. Sometimes leadership requires the leader to be exposed, but when not immediately required, leaders should try to look like privates from a distance

From the Visual standpoint, that’s exactly what I was looking at. Upon seeing the video, his demeanor and how he spoke solidified that for me.

Hmmm… a distillery in Texas. Looks like Sam Culper to me! :-)

Did not see the obvious guy in the first Pic, but The guy with the Bloused pants stood out a little and would be No. 2 target although his posture does not go with the tucked pants.IMHO

If this weekend, some old GI’s stood around on the corner next to local brew-pubs similarly equipped, how many minutes would transpire before police with SWAT b/u arrived. Wanna guess?

In video of the event, Mr. white shirt/blue jeans had a police style body cam on him, which I found strange. Clearly visible is the fact that he has a nose piercing which was visible through his mask, strange that he would leave that in given the other measures he took to conceal his identity. He also had a PTT mic on his plate carrier. Not just hanging a handset off his gear like some of the others.

The radios that a couple people carried appeared to be basic baofeng gmrs handsets, judging from the lack of a screen or any advanced controls. The radios had label stickers on them. One I saw said “Radio 36”.

Several individuals did not have plates in their carriers.

Not surprising about lack of plates. It’s been averaging between 90 – 100 degrees every day in Texas this month. More than few of their tacticals would seem to be girls / trans.

      • harmwulf August 29, 2022 at 17:01

Agreed on it not being surprising. It’s just more an indication confirming they are there for show and not actually expecting a fight. Otherwise more of them might’ve opted to put up with the weight and discomfort. Frankly, given the fitness level of many of them, the ones that do seem to be rocking plates are probably actually using foam airsoft ones.
