Someone is cutting down Flock license-plate reading cameras in Houston, police are investigating

Houston police are investigating a string of vandalism incidents against license-plate reading cameras made by American public safety technology company Flock Safety.

Two of the cameras were vandalized earlier this week, and two more were found on the ground near a city park, ABC13 reported.

The motives of the person or persons who vandalized the cameras are unknown, but Houston police confirmed they’re investigating the incidents.

The cameras have stirred considerable controversies across the country over privacy concerns and accuracy. According to the Institute for Justice, a nonprofit, libertarian law firm, dozens of innocent people have been pulled over, detained and arrested due to errors with license-plate reading cameras.

Houston expanded its use of the cameras in 2022, and commissioners in Harris County renewed their contract through June 2027. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the cameras helped recover stolen vehicles and locate two kidnapped children.
