During a recent class was assigned to carry One Shepherd’s Light Support Weapon (LSW) which is what they use to fulfill the Auto-Rifle role. They use a 24″ HBAR+ barreled rifle with a red dot and an M-60 bipod.

Though a heavy weapon, it was very useful. There was some discussion as to whether the barrel mounted bi-pod would cause a point of impact shift, it does not. The only thing that I disliked about it was the trigger. They went with some version of a binary trigger, I don’t know the maker. It requires a different trigger technique than a precision rifle and if not fired with that technique can cause failures to function. Additionally, it requires a special technique for reassembly that I seemed to have trouble mastering.

For these reasons, I choose to employ it with the trigger in the single shot mode. That was not a detriment as I could achieve the same rate of fire as the binary mode for all intents and purposes. As far as the reassembly, I just made someone else who was familiar with them do it.

All in all I was impressed with the weapon as it did it’s job well. There were several cases of it turning back an assault and it was devastating to troops that were silly enough to venture into the open.

One Shepherd uses the FosTech binary, which is a little funny in it’s assembly. I’ve had good experience with Franklin Armory binary triggers, and they’re much simpler since it’s a drop-in trigger with no permanent modifications necessary for the weapon.

That said, the practice weapon I have for the Support Weapons Class is a simple semi-auto so people can learn to use what’s commonly available. I 100% agree that semi auto can be very successful in this role if used properly, and that’s what I will be teaching.

I have a Fightlite MCR (a belt fed upper for an AR or M16) with a Fostech Echo 2 binary trigger. I’ve found that it is possible to “outrun” the trigger in the excitement of laying down covering fire. Much practice in an even manipulation of the trigger is what is needed.
