Request for Information (RFI) – Weekly SITREP
I am going to make this a weekly post so that we can use this as a place to make any reports on unusual activity or localized hotspots of trouble. We did this a few times during COVID (here, here, here, and here) but I figured that, as our conditions continue to degrade around the country, it would be useful to bring this back as a regularly recurring topic of discussion.

REPORT DATE 4-17-2024
General Location: Southern California
Food Price / Shortages: I’m starting to see empty shelves at WalMart again. Mundane things such as Saltine Crackers, ‘Nilla Wafers, Gorilla Tape
Fuel Prices / Shortages: Both Coleman and Crown brands of 1 gallon cans of “white” gas are up to $14.98. In the past the Crown brand was significantly cheaper. In Texas gasoline was only one dollar cheaper than here.
Civil Unrest / Crime: Armed home invasions are on the rise as are smash and grab robberies
General Location: SW Missouri Ozarks
Food Price / Shortages: None noted, however isles have been removed from the grocery section of wal mart.
Fuel Prices / Shortages: 3.65/gal for diesel
Unusual Military Movement: None. Military movement is unusual here.
Civil Unrest / Crime: Nothing outside of normal. Rednecks settling scores, and petty drug crime here.
Interesting Local News / Events: Totality of the eclipse was a little over 2 minutes here. No crowds showed up, but the local school did go into a “lockdown” based on “advice from the local sheriff’s office”. We kept our kids home.
Public Service Interruptions: None.
Changes in Patterns of Life: None
Any additional observations or comments: Spring is well underway here. Most of the garden is planted. Storm season is underway as well.
General Location: Florida Panhandle
Food Price / Shortages: Some medications, but this is country-wide
Fuel Prices / Shortages: $3.28/gal, up .10 in last week.
Unusual Military Movement: Yesterday noticed while hiking in my AO, the normal TH-73A trainer activity absent, in its place caught 2 AH-60s overhead in the afternoon. Could also be training flights from Eglin, just not usual here
Civil Unrest / Crime: More pop-up shootings, becoming the norm
Interesting Local News / Events: n/a
Public Service Interruptions: Cell Service in outlying areas still seem sluggish as has been the case since February cyberattack (AT&T)
Changes in Patterns of Life: NONE
Any additional observations or comments: DHS still license plate readers, semi-covert trailers dropped on side of I-10 near AL/FL state line.
General Location: Upper New England
Food Price / Shortages: Elevated/None
Fuel Prices / Shortages: Elevated. Current spike is between $3.39- $3.55 Gal Reg/ None
Unusual Military Movement:
The air transport and air tanker fleets are suddenly very active. C-130’s are arriving trans-Atlantic and passing through on unusual routes. The C-130 is infrequently seen here. A Navy E-2 Hawkeye left Norfolk Virginia and flew a route north along the coast to Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay, looped around there and is returning south. There are 2 Blackhawks patrolling between Cape Cod Air station and Cape Ann Massachusetts. These are likely USCG. Air refueling from a Maine Stratotanker is going on over the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The fighters can be seen briefly by zooming in the flight tracker. They must only have the beacon on while refueling. There is a B762 flying in formation with the Stratotanker. This unusual sampling of current airborne military assets took less than 10 mins to gather at the time I wrote this and does not reflect long term monitoring of the ADS-B traffic. Without dwelling on this too much, the activity seems to be higher then normal elsewhere in the US and in Europe. A casual look at Israel shows no current disruption in civilian air traffic at this time.
Civil Unrest / Crime:
Crime rate is consistent with previous reports as to type and frequency.
Despite a recent history of high activity. The regional pro Hamas demonstrators did not appear to be very active this week as the high profile protests took place elsewhere nationally.
Interesting Local News / Events:
As 72 hour waiting period for gun purchases is moving through the Maine Legislature. It will likely become law very quickly.
Public Service Interruptions: None
Changes in Patterns of Life: None
Any additional observations or comments: None
